The mere in Diss is our premier water which is located in the middle of Diss itself. Parking is available at two nearby car parks. The park side is officially the Club’s water, with the back of the King’s Head yard not strictly leased to us as swims BUT is does require a membership to fish from them. Although the gardens are no longer available to the Angling Club to fish, the garden belonging to Grasmere (Conservative Club) maybe used in Club matches.
The Kings Head bank is very deep close in, with depths as deep as 15ft plus in some area’s. The park side is shallow under your rod tip but drops away to depths of 10ft as close in as three rods out. The carp run to just over 18lb, many of which can be seen competing with the ducks for bread at Mere’s mouth during May and June.
With a fountain added by the local Round Table, the fishing over the last two years has been wonderful and in match good bags of fish have been taken, with Tench, Crucians, Good size roach and Rudd showing, Skimmers which were added a few years ago have just started showing in small number and there is a good head of carp that can be tempted to take bread, from close in.
A walk round the Mere on a match day will give you a good insight on how to fish this water, or a chat with the Mere’s none fishing expert Dougy, will give you the low down on what’s been coming out. You just maybe surprised!
There are no day tickets available for the Mere.
The Mere is now open all year round
